I spent much time outdoors growing up because there was space for us to run around with our toy cars made from milk tins, sticks in water-lubricated car tires, or go fruit hunting. It haunts me to see most of our community parks and open spaces get concreted, walled, and gated. But from the streets and dusty half-courts in the Hohoe municipality, an ambitious, inspired, and dedicated educator, Kpeto Ali Kwame, is keeping children busy and away from the screens and vices with his Mawuvi Basketball Fellowship.
Hohoe has always been my favorite spot, so when I saw the great work that Ali was doing with his basketball program, I knew this was a story I had to tell.
Basketball is considered a lesser-known sport in Ghana, somewhat ascribed to privileged children. I met Ali in high school, and he played for the school team. Now, as a trained teacher, he is focused on introducing and teaching the game of basketball to children of diverse backgrounds and instilling in them a sense of responsibility, discipline, and the culture of nature conservation.
Mawuvi Basketball Fellowship leverages the game of basketball as a powerful tool for positive change among youth in their communities, and its impact can not be understated, considering the challenges posed by the ever-evolving digital age and its seclusion effect on the young ones.
A lot of talents and dreams get sacrificed at the alter of deprivation. People forced to be underachievers and take unfulfilling paths because of the lack of opportunity and support to explore their full potentials to have maximum impact in society. So, for me as a creative who is faced with this challenge regularly, I admire the efforts Ali is putting into forming and equipping the dreams of the next generation.
Ali mentioned he started MBF because of a peculiar situation he faced when growing up, so after the times past and he still see those challenges persistent in his community, he decided to take an action. These are the initiatives we need to encourage. Self motivated individuals willing to sacrifice for the interest of people. Ali is just a high school teacher in Ghana and that’s not a class with sound finances so this sacrifice costs more and I salute his greatness.
I made this documentary to highlight this monumental initiative, and I hope it gets the needed traction to generate support for the splendid work being done by Ali and his team. And I hope you enjoy the documentary too.

As the Communications Officer for one of the oldest, if not the oldest, Bilateral Trade Associations in Ghana, I gained significant exposure.
This sector has been the engine of growth and has sustained this country through its turbulent years.
At independence Ghana held a beacon, signalling that the continent was fully aware and ready to seize its destiny for progress and self-actualization. We’ve built America and financed Europe out of poverty; we are now poised to reclaim Africa and restore dignity to take a seat at the table.
We have generated an obscene amount of wealth which means we now work more than we ever had to but at the same time, more of us sink further into poverty.
